St. Albert's Ignite Award Nominee: Tinker Trading Co. Chelsey Tattrie

Tinker Trading Co. is a great example of a business expanding its product line to reach new markets. We first met Tinker’s owner, Andrew Elaschuk, at The Collective where he opened up shop to sell his modern-design wood furniture. Now, Elaschuk finds success with customers who are focused on their furry friends.

Adopting two cats in December 2017, Elaschuk looked around at what kind of cat homes were available in the marketplace. Unsatisfied with the options and knowing cats like compact, comfortable, covered spaces, Elaschuk took his talents and created the Adventure Tent. Shortly after, he began selling the Adventure Tent as the main product offered through Tinker Trading Co.

Elaschuk wanted to create something that his customer could buy to feel good, “It was just nice to make stuff that everybody who has cats and who loves their cats can buy for fun. Buying something that’s fun and cute, has a different vibe to it.”

Elaschuk has seen success in his new niche market. In May 2018 he participated as a vendor at the 2018 Edmonton International Cat Fest and sold out of Adventure Tent’s.

Elaschuk has realized it’s, “Nice to have a niche focus and one line you’re going down instead of branching yourself out in so many ways. Sometimes when people are starting a small business you think, 'Oh, I want to be really diverse. I want to branch out and I want to reach all the customers everywhere. I want to grab everybody.' But really, I’m finding that since I’ve done what I’ve done - focusing on one thing - it just makes you a stronger player in that realm.”

We agree with Elaschuk, that's why we’ve nominated Tinker Trading Co. for the Ignite Award at St. Albert Chamber of Commerce’s Business Awards of Distinction during Small Business Week 2018.
